Quick-Fix for fuel gauge inaccuracy
« on: February 25, 2012, 09:16:10 am »
If your fuel gauge is showing the tank to be way over full and you run out of gas when it still shows about half full, don't be so quick to drop the tank and clean the floater or even replace it. Try this first:

When the tank has between 3 - 4 gallons left in it, find a large empty parking lot or something similar and start driving serpentines and circles, hitting the brakes occasionally for about 3-4 minutes. This causes the floater to move up and down rapidly and it substitutes cleaning the slider portion of the floater. (Threads covering this method of repair are on Pennock's)
While this may only be a temporary fix, chances are that your gauge is now almost accurate again. If it does not fix the issue, you can still try dropping the tank and removing the floater and cleaning it.

Yeah.  I did that.  The security gaurd thought I was drunk.  I did not hit any of the piles of snow, either.
