March 17th Day Cruise
« on: March 06, 2012, 08:41:46 pm »
Trip to Cloudland Canyons, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga Choo Choo and Bar-B-Que.

We can all meet up at the McDonalds on Canton Highway, Hwy 20 in Cartersville.  It's Exit 290 of I-75 North.  Going North, exit and turn right.  The McDonald's is right there and there's a gas station right across the road where we can all top off our tanks.

From there we can cruise up I-75, then exit to go over to Cloudland Canyons and view the sights.  Cruise on up the mountain ridge on Lookout Mountain Parkway, over Lookout Mountain and down into Chattanooga to find some good southern smoked bar-b-que.

As with any road event, bring your radios and cameras.

March 17, 9AM, McDonald's, I-75 Exit 290.

3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

I will and I'll bring them with me on the day of the cruise.  I haven't finalized everything, especially the best bar-b-que I can find in Chattanooga.  I have 2 friends up in Chattanooga that I need to call.

You can cruise up 140 for a nice curvy ride if you don't go up I-75. Don't forget to stop at the falls (if it's hot you can swim, but the water will probably be cold). Also, if you don't want to go to Chattanooga there is a nice little restaurant in Mentone.

I had thought about that, but for those over on the far west side of town, it'd be a little out of the way to get over to Canton.  Going to Mentone would take us back South from the Canyons.  I'd planned to run the mountain ridge from the Canyon all the way to Chattanooga.

hey charlie that Mcdonalds has been torn completely down , they just have poured the new footings for the new one their gonna put up. the Mcdonalds signs are still up but the parking lot is gone too the and the property are all blocked off. it won't make any difference if all you were going to do was meet there and not eat there. theres a wendys across the street and a cracker barrel on the other side of I-75. plenty of gas stations around but the one across from torn down Mcdonalds is about the cheapest around. just thought i would let you know, someone might get confused when they see the big mac's closed. have fun wish my legs would let me still participate.

Hey, thanks for that info.  I guess we could meet across the street at Wendy's.  I was just looking for a place where anyone could get a quick breakfast snack and coffee if they wanted.

I'm not going to do any hiking at the Canyons, either.  I'll just sit and wait on the younger crowd to return.

The BBQ joint has been found.  This comes on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Chattanooga.  His first place recommendation comes over his family's BBQ restaurant that came in at Second Place, so it must be good.  It's been around for over 40 years, and isn't one of those fast food BBQ places.  He said it's the best within a 30 mile radius of Chattanooga.

charlie if you want breakfast snacks like micky ds just go ahead and jump on 75 and go on up to exit 306 thats adairsville at rt140. when your'e done snackin just take rt140 right on in to cloudland. exit 306 has more fastfood places and crackerbarrel. once you leave cloudland theres a hang gliding place on the left before you get to chattanooga its pretty cool to stop and just watch.

I've got the hang gliders on the agenda.  I had looked at 140 but we have to go through Adairsville and Summerville.  With a group it's difficult to keep everyone together.  I plan to go up to Hwy 136 at Resaca and go cross-country from there  Fewer road changes on that route.

There is a Wild Caves tour at Noon on the 17th, but you have to be able and willing to climb, crawl, jump and be willing to get muddy, wet, and cold.  You must pay $30 for them to let you do this and you have to make reservations.  Must be some kind of beauty pack mud and the water is from the Fountain of Youth.

LOL!

BTW Charlie, if you send me the trip maps, I'll print them out at the office. No sense in you using up all your toner/ink. I have a couple of color laser printers at my disposal here.

Thank you, Don, but I've already printed out 10 sets of maps and route sheets.  I don't think we'll have more than 10 cars.  If we do, that's where the radios would come in handy, aside from chit-chat along the way.

There is a McD at the exit just before the Hwy 20 exit, but we'd have to get back on and off the expressway to fill up our tanks.  It would be best if we just hit the Wendy's and everyone could go next door at their leisure to get fueled up, or they could stop and get food before we meet up.

These are the people who said they would be in the parade.  How many of you are going on the cruise?  Now that your car doesn['t have to be shiny, what's to keep you from joining in?
