aftermarket gauge, volt meter wiring???
« on: March 25, 2012, 01:55:59 pm »
Ok so i have the stock 2.8 V6 and my oil pressure gauge and volt meter are not accurate. So i found a good deal on the three gauge pod at advanced and got it. I will be getting the plate from TLG soon but want to get the routing and get the gauges ready and working so, first question is the volt meter i herd from Charlie that the volt light is tied into it so if it isn't there the alt wouldn't charge. How can i wire in the new volt meter and be able to take out the old gauge pod? Thats pretty much it so all answers are greatly appreciated!

Put a resistor across the wires that would normally go to the low voltage light. 100 Ohms should do.
But if your oil gauge isn't accurate, it's probably the sender's fault. If your car is an 85-86 V6 model, replace the sender with an 88 model's sender. You'll have to replace the electrical connector to do this. The 88 sender is more accurate.

well there was that but id rather put a mechanical gauge in cuz i personally trust those over electrical lol. But when you say those two pins which ones are you talking about? I know they are labeled. Also where do i run the wires for the aftermarket volt meter? Can i just run the to the battery posts and be done with it or will that kill the battery?

It appears from looking at the service manual that the volt meter goes between a black-and-pink and a black wire, and the bulb (resistor) goes between a black-and-pink and a brown wire.

Ok so I assume the black and pink wire you mentioned goes to both the bulb and meter? Which would mean I connect my resistor from the Black and pink to the brown? Then the illumination bulb for the gadgets would be connected to the bland and pink for power (as well as the positive wire for the new gauge) and ground is the black wire?

That sounds about right. But check your service manual.

ok well i just looked on radio shack and the resistor i need (according to Doober on pennocks) can only be ordered online. He said to use a 15 ohm 28w resistor. My question is could i use a different more common one they would have in the store that i could get on the way home? That way i can pick one up and start going to town on routing everything for my three new gauges and getting everything wired. Sorry for all the wiring questions i dont know a whole lot about wiring so just wanna be sure about what resistor i pick up and use to connect the two pins.

On your way home, stop at Frye's Electronics at Gwinnett Mall.  They may have what you need.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Oh yeah forgot about Frys... If they have to resistor then I can get everything started today.

ok went by frys today and they had the resistor! The voltage meter was easy to wire up and it reads correctly. The oil pressure gauge on the other hand was a tad difficult to put in lol. The line wasnt long enough to reach from the sending unit location to the gauge pod in the dash. What i ended up doing was going to advance (just before they closed i might add) and get the copper oil pressure line and ran that from the sending unit location and as far as it would reach. Then i used a junction that the copper line came with to connect the plastic line to that and get the extra foot or two i needed to reach the gauge that way. Then just to be safe because im very nerotic about things i dabbed some silicon on spots that i had even the slightest doubt about leaking...just to be safe...then i drove the car around read 40 psi when crusing and around 20 at idle (pretty sure it was fully warmed up yet) and it didnt leak. It also looks ugly right now just cause the plate the gauges mount in isnt made for the gauge pod but once i get paid again i will be ordering the TLG tri-gauge plate
