Built a Cardboard Indy Scoop, want your opinions.
« on: April 25, 2012, 07:33:31 am »
So last night I had some time and some cardboard so I built a Indy Scoop.

I am wondering what yall think. I could fiberglass is and make it look right. Just wondering if you like the design.
I am not sure if I like it totally or not. I am thinking it needs to be more rounded. Not sure if it would look better after I fiberglass it and sand it or I need to round the edges more to look like a Real Indy Scoop

I think for the smoother lines of the car, it's a little too boxy.  I also wonder how you plan to make it functional.  The V6 intake doesn't lend itself to a center air feed and any attempts to route it from center to the throttle body would cause enough bends that the intake would be rendered ineffective for any gains.  It might even diminish performance.  There's also the possibility that any piping would interfere with the throttle mechanism.

The original Indy scoop was mounted onto a 4 cylinder with a center-mounted throttlebody, so it was a direct flow.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Getting hinges on it will most likely become another problem. Unless you plan to remove it every time you open the engine cover.

How about two, one for over each engine vent? ;D

Yea, those were both my thoughts as well after I built it and opened the hood.
I think the side type would be smarter. Prolly start builting a different one for the side. I just liked the center better, but I will try it again. Prolly take the horn off this one and modify it all.

Back to the drawing board.

Scoops over the vents is a BAD idea. Air is supposed to exit from the vents, not enter into them, for proper engine cooling. The central Indy scoop is to provide air to the engine, not for cooling air.
Here's the scoop implementation on Paul Hosler's race Fiero

OK, so Jason also has to put in a longitudinal engine to make the scoop work. I'm all for that! ;D

It works well on transverse engines also, especially SD4's.

Hmmmm, I really just like the look of it. When I was a kid I had a Model GT wth a scoop over it. Kinda just like something slightly different. My just do it for the venting instead of a Mustang Hood Scoop.

Defanitly need to make it more rounded like the one above
