5-speed getrags were also used in these cars

these cars also came with 5-speed getrag transmissions --  87 to 89 cavaliers
                                                                                               87 to 88 pontiac 6000
                                                                                               87 to 89 berettas
                                                                                               87 to 88 celbrity
                                                                                               87 to 89 corsica
                                                                                               87 to 89 cimarron
                                                                                               87          fierenza

All of them.  GM didn't produce any transmissions with axle shafts that were designed for longitudinal engine cars, other than the maybe the early Oldsmobile Toronado.  Not sure about some of the Corvettes, either, but the axle shafts wouldn't be a part of the transmission.

Some of the cars with Getrags had 4-cylinder motors, and the transmissions were geared differently from Fiero transmissions. Be aware of that if you pick up any old transmission to use.

Let me correct myself on this.  I believe I read that some of the Corvettes have a driveshaft hooked direct to the engine and clutch assembly with the transmission being at the rear (transaxel) but the transaxel wouldn't be capable of being bolted direct to an engine.

Are these 100% the same or do you need the kit that Rodney Dickman sells to make this work?

I don't know how the others compare, but I can say from experience that the 87-89 Cavaliers and Berettas have Getrag transmissions, but the slave cylinder setup is different from the Fiero.  They have the same bell housing bolt pattern, though and the same dimensions as the Fiero transmissions.  Rodney could answer the specific questions for application.

i'm pretty sure 95-99 cavaliers and sunfires also had getrag trannies

Would any of these transmissions be a direct replacement for a Fiero getrag transmission?  I understand that the master/slave cylinders are different.

All those had 2.8 or 3.1 engines.  Melanie's Beretta had a slave bolted to the trans in a vertical position IIRC.  Cable mounts would be different.  I don't know if the throwout bearing was hydraulic or operated by a slave pushrod.  But the transmissions have the same bolt pattern as the Fiero

Wouldn't it be easier to adapt one of these transmissions to replace a Fiero getrag, than to change to a different transmission?

I think Raydar did one.  I wonder if his is a more beefy version than the stock getrag.
