911! think icm went bad anyone have a spare?
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:38:06 am »
So at the moment im stuck on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck to get my car home. What jappened is I started the car to head home from jens house and it was missing pretty bad and it would run fine every now and then while driving. I pulled over in a gas station and it was odlong and running fone so o filled the tank and start driving home. I got to 3rd gear gave it a little gas because it was running fine then the engine died I herd a pop and the car wouldnt start back up. Being only 1 mile from my house an officer gave me a ride where I picked up my tools a coil pack that I knew was good and my grandmas car. I switched the coil packs and still mo spark coming from the pack still. So, next step is to assume the icm went bad....is anyone going to be in the area of satellite blvd that would have a spare icm i can get the car running and i will return it once i get a new one in? I work at gerber collision on satellit blvd and wil be there almost all day tomorrow. So if anyone can I would greatly appreciate it!!! Call me anytime at 678-570-6809

I have a couple of ICM's but I can't get to you today.  Have a funeral to attend then I have to go to Cleveland to pick up someone to stay with my Mother.  If you need it, Pat has the coupe courtesy car.

Ok something new. I replaced the icm and the car started but isnt running on all cylinders....replaced the cap and rotor as well and the plugs and wire arent even a few months old...no change still....bunch of unburnt crud coming out of the exhaust also. Does anyone have any ideas what could have happened? Does anyone have a decent condition v6 that I could buy and get in asap? Or find out whats going on with this one and fix it if its not serious...

Have you checked your spark plugs? Wires?

I went ahead and replaced the plug for the third time of this past year...wires are fine and I now have a new icm on there. Also when I got off work I had to drive the car home, even with it running terrible almost like it was running on 3 cylinders, and after two miles I was sitting at a lite and once the light turned green and I got it in gear ran perfect like it never happened... After all that car actually runs better than it did before all this happened... Fieros drive me crazy

Check the 2 fuel injector fuses.  Bank 1 and Bank 2.  They're marked TBI   Inj 1  and TBI   Inj  2.  If you're getting a strong unburned gas smell from the exhaust bad enough to burn your nose and eyes when you stand behind it, I'd check the Coolant Temperature Switch just above the water pump.

Ok so everytjing was running perfect last night. This morning start the car and was missing like crazy like the other day and throwing black crud out the exhaust which told me its running rich. I decided to try something....I unplugged the csi and bam! Car start right up no misfires running perfect. So it looks like that csi was putting loads of fuel into the engine while cold that it was running terrible. So I am leaving it unplugged for now seeing how it wont cause any problems.

Fierofool,
Hey man I have not been on this forum for some time now.  I popped in here this evening and saw this thread. As you may or may not know I am trying to fix my 85GT I got here and it is running like crap similar to what Chaz's car is doing here.  It SOUNDS like the engine is missing but you can drive it around and it occasionally will kinda clear out and run but mostly it just sounds like crap.  You mentioned the coolant temperature switch, what will be the result if this switch is bad or not hooked up because my car will choke you out pretty quick if you stand behind it when it is running.  Do you have a picture of this switch, there is a large black cylindrical electrical part around that area on mine that was unhooked but I plugged it back in and there was no change.  Also I know that you do the refurbishment of the headlight motors are you still doing that and what do you charge for doing a set for me?  I need to post some things in the want ads here as I am looking for some parts needed for my car.

I am chronicling the buildup in  my thread on Pennocks which started with an odd name, it is called " Looking for input on my next fiero project".   I am hoping that I can email Cliff Pennock and have him change the name here soon, I'd like to call it something else LOL..  Anyways I have done a complete compression check on the engine and got some decent numbers and I THINK I have it timed right, it runs too good to be too far out and I timed it with the coil wire so I could see the difference between 1 and 4 pistons.... It is right on 10BTDC now..  It just runs like crap and I am out of ideas here, if I cannot find a cause I will have to tear off the intake and heads and see what the hell is wrong inside.  I can post a video of it running.  I drove it around quite a bit yesterday and it feels like it wants to go...  Just something stopping it.  I read about the damn cold start injector issue but I am  not sure what to do to bypass it really.  I guess I could just unplug it but I might have to remove the disty again to get to the darn wire.  It is kinda tight in there. Any advice here would be most appreciated.  I'd love to be able to drive this baby and come down to meet you guys for monthly meets again LOL...peace

Pete, I'm going to copy and paste this into the Tech Tips section so as not to divert from Chaz's problem.  I'll respond over there.
