To shorten the shifter in my 87, I just went to PullAPart, pulled the clip and took the shift lever out of an 84 and swapped it out with my Getrag shift lever. 
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.

I have an 84 shifter in my 88 t-top, also. I think I got it from Ebay.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

I cut and welded my 85 shifter handle in the 90s before the 4.3 swap. I guess it is pretty close to the length of the 84.

I've been to South Atlanta Pull a part the most but rarely go now. That 88 on the northside looks interesting. I wonder what they sell complete cars for?

My 87 was an auto 2.5 that I drove daily before the swap. Sure, it shook at some rpms, the exhaust manifold eventually cracked, the converter lock up was starting to slip, and the dis module was going out, but the ac was soooo nice!

I don't have the compressor on the 4.3 car. Once the rest is sorted, I may find a way to put it back on but with these swaps, it is usually driven by the rubber mounted ring on the harmonic damper on the crankshaft becuase it is so tight with the longer v8. I'd rather not do it that way.

I traded the original compressor to Don years ago. It will likely be a new sanden gong on rather than the original variable displacement pump.

My daily driver's ac went out a few years ago and I have not bothered to replace it. Too many irons in the fire so I never got around to it.
