anyone use full roller rockers v6?
« on: May 25, 2014, 09:14:34 am »
Anyone use full roller rockers on their v6?  Any recommendation would be highly appreciated. I have NO experience with this kind of rocker.
In my research, I've found that I'll need to either find 10mm polylocks, or change the studs out to 3/8 thread.

I don't think anyone in the club has done it, but we have a low mileage V6 with roller rockers that was part of The Joel Project.  It will be going up for sale.

I'm really more interested in tweaking the motor that's in the car now. If i brought another motor into the garage,My wife would call animal control.....on ME!
I'll take pics and report what i find.....good oor bad. :o

I put full roller rockers on my 88 duke. Does that count?

Yeah, i think so. I read some of that post. You had to drill out and tap for the 3/8" studs in the duke head too, right?  If i go only roller tip, I'll just use existing studs and polylocks, if i go full roller, I'm thinking of just getting the kit from west coast fiero, which includes the proper narrow body rockers and 10 mm stud bottom and 3/8 top, and be done with it. What say you. Pointers?

Yes, I had to drill and tap the head.
It sounds like the kit would be an easy way to go (but probably more expensive than doing it yourself).

It's about 330bucks. I've been pricing full rockers and its about 220 plus. New studs would be around 100 for 10mto3/8. Yeah, the regular 3/8 studs are much cheaper, but, with the v6, I'll have to pull heads to drill straight. I'd rather leave them on the motor, so, the way i see it, the ccost savings wouldn't be there compared to effort?  Like i said, i haven't done this yet, so i may be making this way harder than it really is...

I recall reading an old article about clearance inside the valve cover being a problem.  I don't remember what the maximum lift rockers were, but I think it was 1:6.  Someone also said they had to put 2 valve cover gaskets on and another etched out his valve covers where the rockers hit.  I don't remember what ratio they had, though.  I think the Joel Project car has 1:6 and I don't recall that they did anything special for clearance.

I read that too, but reading further, i noticed they where talking about s10 and Firebird stamped steel valve covers.  One thread stated that they solved the problem of needing spacers by using the fiero valve covers. When does the Joel project motor go up for sale?  1.6 is what I'm looking at doing. It might be worth letting my wife win a few arguments to get a jump start on my Fiero spare motor collection!

The Joel car is for sale now.  It's not owned by us, but by johnyrottin, up in Illinois.  You will need to deal with him on that one.  I just posted notice on Pennocks that it would be available.  If you're spending the weekend up here this weekend, I could take you up to see the car when you come over to get the dash and AC bracket and show you a shortcut back home.

Poly locks?
Are you switching to a solid lifter cam?
I used the Comp 1.6 roller tip rockers on my engine for a while. I just used the nuts that came with the rockers. I had regular hydraulic lifters.

Raydar,
No. Not planning on switching to a solid lifter. I planned on using the existing cam, hence the 1.6 rocker. I'm curious, on the roller tips, was it worth it to just use the tips, or would you have gone with full roller rockers if you had to do it again?  I'm wondering if I'm going overboard, when i might be perfectly happy with roller tips?  I like the idea of just installing rockers, instead of studs and everything.

Is this to be a daily driver or an occasional racer? I read somewhere that steel rockers are recommended for daily drivers over aluminum. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I went with steel on my duke (which is a daily driver).
