The Warrior Project
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:08:51 pm »
The club is preparing a car donated to us, with the eventual goal of in turn donating it to a wounded veteran in need of transportation.
Instead of our regular June meeting, we had a workshop to see if we could get it running...

Pictures from the June meeting and workshop on the project car...

When working on a Fiero engine, sometimes it's easier if you stand in the trunk.

These were snapped by Fiero GTB as we worked on the Warrior Project.
Engine and throttle body trash.  Notice the junk inside the throttle body.

Aerodon working on the shifter.

Sorting out the temperature gauge wiring.

Aerodon and Redraif evacuating and recharging the AC system.

Raydar splicing together some harness wires.

The maiden voyage.  Let's take it up the road.

It made it back under it's own power.  A very productive and rewarding day.

Thanks to the Georgia Gang and the unseen man behind the camera, Fiero GTB.

Looks and sounds awesome. Sorry I had to spend my last week on a cruise ship, but I think I racked up enough points to play with Fieros again.

Look forward to seeing you in July.

Some of the things we found we needed for the car.  If you have anything you can contribute, or if there's anything I've forgotten, cut and paste this list into your post and add to it.

Automatic shift surround with good shift boot.  (Charlie)
Air filter canister.  (Charlie)
Thermostat housing cap.  (Georgia Fieros)
Temp gauge sending unit with harness clip.
Spark plugs and wires.
Split plastic wire loom cover in various sizes to clean up engine bay wiring harnesses.
1 black plastic cap for the tail light screws.
Oil Filter.  (Charlie)
Oil.  (The club has oil in stock)
Black plastic lug nut covers.  (Charlie-Maybe.  I at least have a few.)
Paint job.
Powder coating of engine grills, mirrors and other parts.
Headliner re-covered.
Fuel filter.
Air filter.
Octane booster to increase octane of 3 year old fuel in the tank.

I have plenty of the black lug nut covers, since I replace all the ones on my red car with chrome ones.

I think I'm beginning to make a little progress with our Warrior Project.

Today I spoke with one of the painters I had mentioned at Saturday's meeting and workshop.  I will take him to Powder Springs one day next week to see the car and get his opinion and what he might charge to repaint the car.  I also spoke with Mike Thies of South East Wheels, a website devoted to automobiles, shows and related information.  Mike and Ron Rizzi were good acquaintances and Ron had worked some of Mikes shows, filling in as the event DJ.  Mike is highly involved with Dixie Cruisers.  I met Mike in the sound booth at the Winder Dixie Cruisers cruise in when Ron was DJ'ing and also Mike has been a regular participant when we were putting on the Auburn 4th of July and AuburnFest car show.  Some of you will remember his red '56 Porsche Sporster.

I explained to Mike what we were doing and the difficulties we had had with the national organizations and I asked if he might be of help.  He quickly called a friend of his who is the CFO for the Buford, Ga. American Legion.  Troy Zavitz.  Turns out Troy also knows the former Auburn Mayor's wife, of whom I also spoke of on Saturday.

Mr. Zavitz and his Legion Post apparently are involved with some of the younger Warriors coming back from the middle east.  I was invited to meet with Mr.'s Thies and Zavitz this Wednesday afternoon.  Fiero GTB is working up a press release to be put into a blog on South East Wheels and Mr. Thies has tentatively offered to have Georgia Fieros as a guest on his Garage 71 Motor Head Radio Program to promote our project and maybe develop some sponsors to help us with the major items.

I'll report back after my meeting with them.

We haven't had any response to a press release I sent out to about a dozen newspapers and some electronic media.  There have been no comments posted on American Legion Post 127's website.

Should we have a couple hundred flyers printed up and distributed at the car show next week?  Maybe set up a table to take donations?

A donation table would be good, but we should have a very large banner or backdrop of some sort to explain the project.

If you want to send me the flyer I'll be glad to print a couple hundred on my home printer.

What would it cost to have a couple hundred printed where we had the club banner printed?  Walk around and drop them in the cars at the show.  I wonder if the show would give us a moment on stage to promote the Warrior Project and seek help in finding a recipient.  I'll email OldScoutDad and ask

I think it would be a good idea to hang it on one of our canopies, especially if we're able to solicit help for the Warrior Project.

Yes, bring the club banner. I also authorize the printing of flyers to hand out/place on cars at the show.

If Roger still has the tow dolly available on Friday, I'll pick it up and take the Warrior Project to the interview on Saturday.  The car show is in Hiram and begins at 4 PM.  I welcome anyone who would like to go along to help and maybe pass out some of our flyers, you are welcome to come along.  I can handle 3 more passengers.  Wear your club colors.

I got the tow dolly back 2 days ago.
I'll have to check the air in the tires, grease the bearings and fix that d@#!% light.
Come and get it.
My dad will want it back ASAP.
You can't fix stupid but, you can adjust it with a 2x4.
