IGNITION COIL WIRE
'85-88 V-6:   On the V-6 engine, the 2-wire cable (pigtail) from the distributor to ignition coil is about 10" long (250 mm) and is no longer available from GM. A similar wiring cable, without the protective plastic wire loom, is available from the '84-85 Z28 Camaro. It may be available from other Camaros or Firebirds of similar vintage but we can't yet confirm this. A similar pigtail is also available for Chevrolet S-10 trucks of the late '80s which had the same V-6 engine as the Fiero.

IGNITION MODULE
The ignition module in the V-6 Fiero is infamous for dying at inopportune times. Every Fiero owner should carry a spare ignition module along with the appropriate screwdriver(s) to replace it. Since the original equipment ignition module by AC Delco has the reputation of being the longest-lasting, it's best to use AC Delco when possible. Of course AC Delco is not the lowest cost unit on the market. So when you run across an AC Delco unit in a salvage yard, grab it. The list below shows cars which use the same ignition module as the Fiero.

When replacing the module: (a) don't lose the small mounting screws; they are hard to find in any store; (b) clean off the old heat sink compound under the ignition module and replace it with new; (c)don't over-tighten the ignition module mounting screws; they thread into the distributor mounting plate which is aluminum and can be easily stripped.

Our thanks to John Craker for this information.

INTAKE MANIFOLD, FUEL INJECTORS
The intake manifolds of the Fiero were used on many GM cars with the exception of the upper manifold on the '85-88 V6. We have seen upper manifolds in salvage yards which appear very similar to the upper Fiero V6 manifold (without the engraving or decal marking) but do not know if they will exchange.

FUEL INJECTORS
'84-88 2.5L There is a single fuel injector in the throttle body of 2.5L Fiero engines. We are unaware if the injector can be replaced by itself. If the fuel injector is faulty, it may be easier to replace the entire throttle body with one from a donor Fiero.

'85-88 2.8L We do not have confirmation which cars have the same fuel injectors used in the 2.8L Fiero. We suspect that cars using the same center manifold may have the same injectors. See the Intake Manifold section for the 2.8L.

Cold Start Injector Tony Borbely reports that the cold start injector for the 2.8L V-6 is AC Delco Part No. 212-312 at a cost of $114. If you visit acdelco.com and use the "shop by part number" feature, you can find 61 other vehicles which use the same cold start injector. Tony also reports that the fuel rail to injector fuel tube (for the cold start injector) and seals are also listed on the AC Delco web site. It is likely these items are reported as "discontinued" by GM.

MIRRORS, EXTERNAL
EXTERNAL MIRRORS

GM used the same outside non-power mirrors on all Fieros. These same outside mirrors were used in a handful of other GM cars in the mid to late '80s. Power mirrors have the same glass but different mounting. Be sure to observe this difference when using salvaged units.

Vehicles with the same mirrors:

Camaro             '82-92
Corvette           '84-96
Chevy El Camino    '86-88
Caballero Sprint   '85-88
Firebird           '82-93
The mirror housings in other cars may differ slightly from the Fiero. The '84-91 Corvette mirrors are heated. The heating feature can be transferred to the Fiero if you can handle the wiring. If you have a rear defroster in your Fiero you can wire the mirrors in parallel with the defroster so they are turned off automatically.
Aftermarket mirrors can be obtained from parts stores under the following numbers:

Mirror glass, left  (manual & elec) Look! 51004
Mirror glass, right (manual & elec) Look! 51039
These replacements will include the glass portion only, not any of the plastic mounting. They may also be the less-expensive plastic mirrors, not glass like the originals.

INTERNAL MIRRORS

GM used the same internal mirror on the Fiero as it did on many other GM cars of the same period. Replacement of the mirror is simple and new ones can be purchased at auto parts stores from the "Help!" section. Replacement mirrors can also be obtained from salvage yards. GM mirrors of the same period used the same mounting technique, so use of the exact mirror is not necessary unless you are trying to maintain a perfectly stock appearance.

Upgrades to the interior mirror can be made using later model mirrors which contain auto-dimming, compass, and external temperature. Such mirrors require wiring modifications that are simple but beyond the scope of this manual. Mirrors with the auto-dimming function that are known to work come from early '90s Cadillacs. The late '90s early 2000 Yukon rear view mirror contains the compass, auto dim and outside temperature features and is known to work. No doubt other GM or aftermarket mirrors can be used but we have no additional data.

OIL PAN
Fortunately many GM engines shared the same oil pan as the Fiero. Even some Jeep and other American Motors engines used the same pan!

OIL PRESSURE SENSOR & CONNECTOR
The oil pressure sensor in the '84-87 A/C-equipped Fiero is prone to problems. There is a vent hole in the sensor which allows entry of water and humid air. Over time, the internals of the sensor corrode and cause an erratic oil pressure gauge or complete failure. A GM Techincal Service Bulletin advises to plug the sensor hole and use a rubber cap over the connector. The GM part number for the plug is 12085529. A dab of silicone will serve the same purpose. The electrical connector, should you need to replace it, is part number 12085529.

If you want to see what the inside of a damaged oil pressure sensor looks like, check this link: Damaged Sensor

The damage-prone sensor in the '84-87 Fiero can be replaced by the sensor from an '88 Fiero but requires a matching connector. Some replacement sensors for the '88 Fiero may come with 4 electrical pins in the socket, but only three of the pins are used in the Fiero wiring. If you use one of the 4-pin replacement sensors in an earlier Fiero, be sure to correctly wire the mating connector!

Another "feature" of the oil pressure sensor (all years) is it contains contacts which supply power to the fuel pump after oil pressure has been established. However these contacts are in parallel with two contacts in the fuel pump relay which also provides power to the fuel pump. If the fuel pump relay fails all the power for the pump goes through the contacts in the oil pressure sensor. Apparently these contacts are not rated for the full pump load. This can cause the contacts to overheat and damage the pressure-sensing portion of the sensor. We believe GM erred in this application. The sensor as described by AC Delco (the sensor manufacurer) is for "oil pressure w/light". It appears the contacts within the switch were intended for an "idiot light" on the dash, not as current-carrying components for the fuel pump. Therefore, running fuel pump power through the sensor seems to be a design error, but that's the way it is (unless you change it).

The oil pressure sensor in the '88 Fiero is a different design (no vent hole) but still has the contacts for the fuel pump. If your oil pressure gauge always reads maximum pressure the culprit is likely (a) the fuel pump relay has failed and therefore all current for the fuel pump is going through the oil pressure sensor, and (b) the oil pressure sensor has subsequently overheated and the pressure-sensing portion of the unit has short-circuited, thus giving a high gauge reading. It is wise to check the fuel pump relay when the oil pressure sensor is replaced.

If you purchase a new sensor, the GM part numbers are as follows:

'84    - #25036378 (AC Delco D1816)
'85-87 - #10045775 (AC Delco D1808)
'88    - #12555492 (was #10096169 in the 22P manual) (AC Delco D1808A)
A new oil pressure sensor runs $25-50 depending on where you shop. However, be careful what you purchase. There are Taiwanese oil pressure sensors sold as replacements for the V-6 ('85-'88, even though the '88 is different) which are definitely mis-wired internally. They will cause the gauge fuse to blow, the oil pressure gauge to peg, and the fuel pump will not run initially when the ignition is turned to "ON". These sensors come as different brands and in different boxes but all are made in Taiwan. We suggest you try AC Delco sensors and keep the receipt!

'84 Fiero: The vehicles listed below used the same oil pressure sensor as the '84 Fiero, GM Part No. 25036378. This is the same as AC Delco D1816. If you search the AC Delco site, part D1816 is available but is not listed for ANY vehicle. If you search AC Delco for the '84 Fiero oil pressure sensor you will get Part No. F1808 which is the same as the '85-87 Fiero.

'84-87 Fiero: The following cars use the same oil pressure sensor as the '84-87 Fiero, GM Part No. 10045775. AC Delco uses the same part number or F1808. Note that the part number listed above for the '84 is different (25036378). Nevertheless, the Hollander manual says the '85-87 sensor also fits the '84 and the AC Delco web site confirms this. The mating connector is GM Part No. 12085529 or AC Delco PT137.

Overhead Console
The overhead console in the Fiero contains cabin lights and, in cars so equipped, the control for the subwoofer system. If you are willing to do a little modification there are a couple of overhead consoles which we understand can be retrofit to the Fiero to update it and provide a bit more room for other electronics.

Supposedly the overhead console from a Grand Am and a GMC Jimmy will fit the Fiero with some minor modifications to the Fiero headliner. At this writing we do not know which model years provide the best version of the overhead console. If you perform this modification we would appreciate feedback with details.

PAINT
The factory paint is a base coat with a clear coat finish. The base coat is a thermoset acrylic enamel, not a urethane. The clear coat is urethane. The paint code which indicates the original factory paint color is located on the Service Parts Identification Label (also known as the "RPO [Regular Production Option] Sticker") on the left front fender well near the brake master cylinder.

The paint code is the last item listed and is in the form WA-NNNN (N = any number). If a Fiero had the "ground effects", two numbers will be listed, usually with a "U" and "L" for upper and lower colors. The number(s) shown is the Fisher Body "WA" paint number. (Fisher Body is the division of GM that produced and painted the car body.) Use this number when buying matching paint from any paint supplier. Touch-up paint suppliers such as PlastiKote and Dupli-Color also use this number as a cross-reference. Use the cross-reference manual found by the paint display in your auto parts store to obtain the correct spray can or bottle for your car. Or if you are repainting the entire car, give this number to your painter.

Due to aging of old paint, new paint will not be the same shade. If a Fiero is repainted we suggest use of the newer two-part urethane systems even though one-part acrylic systems may be cheaper. If you are a do-it-yourself painter, the Kirker brand (kirkerautomotive.com) of urethane paints is economical and decent quality. Many painters recommend premium paints such as DuPont and Sikkens for top quality results.

A helpful web site for touch-up paints is http://www.paintscratch.com/

RADIATOR, CAP & HOSES
RADIATOR: The aluminum core radiators used in Fieros are unique and no other cars use these identical radiators. (One of the Chevette radiators is very similar except for mounting holes.) Some models of the Fiero have thinner radiators than others. The thicker model has greater cooling capacity and will swap to any Fiero. The V-6 Fiero came standard with the thicker radiator. Fieros with the four cylinder engine used both types during their production lifetime. The "thin" radiator has a size of 15" x 19.75" x 1". The "thick" radiator has a size of 15" x 19.75" x 1.375". Replacements are readily available from conventional parts suppliers. One source for radiators is Auto Radiator Outlet in Sacramento, CA, at 800-252-0333.

Ledfoot Racing of Orange, California, makes a line of radiators called Champion Radiators (championradiators.com). Their radiator part no. CC828 fits any Fiero with a little modification of the supports and brackets. Installation photos are at this link: fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/098899-2.html This is a 3-core all-aluminum radiator and is reported to be an excellent product. According to the Champion web site, the radiator can handle engines up to 450 HP.

If you have a specialty radiator situation such as for a large V-8 installation, try Superior Radiator near Detroit, Michigan. http://www.wwwsuperiorradiator.com

RADIATOR CAP: The radiator cap in the Fiero is a 15 PSI non-vented type and is readily available as an aftermarket item. Be careful to get the non-vented version to avoid overheating. EVERY auto parts supplier we have checked has the wrong radiator cap listed in their computer for the Fiero. Be certain to get the non-vented type. The original GM cap is preferred, Part No. 10230 (or 10036879 is the old number). AC Delco also makes a good replacement cap under their number RC27. It can be found at acdelco.com. A suitable replacement from parts stores is Stant No. 11230. We also understand that Stant has a new cap for the Fiero, No. 45819. We have not had an opportunity to verify this new version and would appreciate feedback from anyone who has.

THERMOSTAT CAP: Note that the thermostat cap is not the same as the radiator cap. The thermostat cap is available from AC Delco (acdelco.com) under their part number RC40. This cap is also available from auto parts stores.

COOLANT HOSES: The molded coolant hoses for the Fiero appear to be unique and not used on other cars. The following list of hoses by Gates Rubber should fit any V-6 Fiero although some trimming is required on some hoses.

Coolant Hoses for '85-87 2.8L Engine, Gates Part Numbers:

Upper - Engine to Crossover Pipe        20661
Upper - Crossover Pipe to Lateral Pipe  21532
Upper - Lateral Pipe to Radiator        21439
Lower - Lateral Pipe to Engine          21594
Lower - Radiator to Lateral Pipe        20940
Heater to Pipe-1, w/o A/C               19602
Heater to Pipe-2                  Gates 18853,  Delco 16078M
Pipe 2 to Pipe 3                        20338
Throttle Body to Pipe               5/16" x 3"
Throttle Body to Engine                 10820
We understand but cannot confirm first-hand that Advance Auto part no. E72003 will replace the "lateral pipe to engine" hose, although it is longer and must be cut on both ends to fit properly. Also, the end which attaches to the engine (water pump inlet) is a tight fit.

Coolant Hoses for 1988 V-6 2.8L Engine, Gates Part Numbers:
Upper - Engine to Crossover Pipe        20661
Upper - Crossover Pipe to Lateral Pipe  21763
Upper - Lateral Pipe to Radiator        21764
Lower - Lateral Pipe to Engine          21758
Lower - Radiator to Lateral Pipe        21708
Heater to Pipe-1, w/o A/C               19602,  Delco 18117L
Heater to Pipe-2, w/o A/C               18836
Heater to Pipe-1, w/ A/C            not avail.
Heater to Pipe-2, w/ A/C            not avail.
Pipe 2 to Pipe 3                        20338
Throttle Body to Pipe               5/16" x 3"
Throttle Body to Engine                 10820
Coolant Hoses for the '84 2.5L Engine:

                        Gates #             Goodyear #
Upper - Pipe To Rad.    21439 Cut to fit      61329
Upper - Eng. To Pipe    21487 Cut to fit      61077
Lower - Pipe To Rad.    20940 Cut to fit      61329
Lower - Eng. To Pipe    21422
Heater To Pipe-1        19602 Cut to fit      63242
Pipe-1 To W.P.          19608 Cut to fit
Heater To Pipe-2        18853 Cut to fit      63149
Pipe-2 To Pipe-3        28466 Cut to fit      63806
Pipe-3 To Pipe-4        28466 Cut to fit      63806
Some of the hoses for '84 are noted as "Cut to fit" and we suspect these may fit other cars also. Some of the Goodyear hoses may be the corrugated flexible size to fit multiple vehicles.

You can find a local supplier of the Gates hoses via this web site: http://www.gates.com/part_locator/reverselookup.cfm

You can find Goodyear parts such as hoses and belts at this web site: http://partfinder.veyance.com/

Note that for an '88 Fiero with air conditioning there is no listing for "heater to pipe" hoses. The best solution we know is to take the old hoses to a parts store and ask the clerk to allow you to peruse all the heater hoses for a close match. We have done this successfully and found that getting longer-than-necessary hoses with a few of the necessary bends will work. We installed such hoses in our '88 and then cut them at the pipe end to suit.

Many Fiero V6 owners report that removal of the hoses/pipes to the throttle body will not harm performance. In fact it is curious that these items were provided by GM. Presumably the hot coolant is routed to the throttle body to eliminate icing. Since the throttle body is unlike a carburetor and has minimal venturi effect, icing should be impossible. We have never heard of icing in a Fiero throttle body. The throttle body hoses have been removed from both our '88 Fieros for years and performance has been unaffected.

HEATER CORE: The Fiero heater core is in the front above the passenger footwell. This requires hot coolant to be routed from the engine to the front of the car. On the '88 Fiero, the heating hoses run from the engine and connect to pipes below the battery next to the base of the firewall. The connection between the rubber hoses and metal pipes is a quick disconnect. The disconnect is plastic and deteriorates over time. The replacement is Dorman #800-405. Since this item is not in high demand you will probably have to order it if you need it. Stores like AutoZone, Advance Auto, etc., will gladly do this. The cost is about $4. Changing the quick disconnect is made easier by using a special tool, Dorman #800-408. You can view the Dorman products at dormanproducts.com.

RADIO
Several radio models were used in the Fiero. Listing all the variations and the cars which used corresponding radios is pointless since OEM and aftermarket replacements are readily available. (For a used radio, check late '80s GM cars in any salvage yard.) One of the options available was "Premium Sound" with a sub woofer. As far as we can determine no other vehicle used the same sub woofer system so replacements will have to come from a donor Fiero.

Newer GM radios which will fit the Fiero and maintain the factory look can be found in salvage yards and via the Internet. The radio/CD unit from early '90s Pontiac Pontiac Grand Ams is a popular choice. Wiring adapters or modification of the connectors is required. If radios are salvaged from other cars be sure any security features can be bypassed. The Fiero radio size is "1.5 DIN". Many aftermarket radios are made to this size and will fit with few modifications.

SAIL PANELS & QUARTER WINDOWS
'85-88 Notchback: Sail panels are the small triangular "windows" behind each door on the notchback style Fiero. (The notchback style is any Fiero other than the '86-88 GT.) All sail panels consist of a black molded frame with glass or acrylic inserts. The '84 frame is different than later years but will transfer to any year notchback. The '85-88 frames can also be retrofitted to an '84 with no difficulty if the fasteners are in good condition. The inserts in the 1984 Fiero are glass and tend to age well. The inserts in the '85-88 Fiero are cast or sheet acrylic and frequently have cracks and hazing due to long-term exposure. GM replacements are no longer available.

Aftermarket sail panels (inserts) for '85-88 Fieros are available from fierosails.com. Good used frames are available from thefierofactory.com.

Arrowhead Emblems: This emblem (GM P/N 20468876) found on sail panel frames is no longer available from GM but can be found at fierostore.com. If you can't find replacements, the mounting recess for the arrowhead can be shaved off the sail panel frame and the resulting nicks filled and painted. If you do this you can replace the old emblem with a new version from a mid-'90s Grand Am which is almost the same size as the original. The new emblem is a peel-and stick version, GM Part No. 22591098, which in early 2005 was $10.46 at gmpartsdirect, com. In our opinion this emblem looks better than the original.

'86-88 GT Fastback The factory quarter windows on the '86-88 GT are made of cast acrylic (not Lexan as stated by some suppliers, including GM!) and tend to show hazing and cracking similar to sail panels on the notchback Fiero. Replacements are sometimes available from GM for about $150 per side and appear to be original manufacture. This implies that they may incur hazing and cracking problems over time. The part numbers are needed if ordering from GM. They are 20701106 (right) and 20701107 (left).

Aftermarket quarter windows are available from fierowarehouse.com and from Lori at thefierofactory.com. They are close to, but not exactly like, OEM quarter windows. Prices are about $100-$130 per side.
