Is it my bad eyes, or are the hinges for the torsion springs, as well as the EGR valve and mount plate red? Is that some sort of gauze on the Y-pipe? Mine has some sort of solid shield on it. What is the Christmas wire coming from the trunk manifold?

Looks like there's some oversprey on the rods, hinges and the old rebreather tube and the EGR has been painted. The gauze is heat wrap. Looks like fiberglass tape. That wire appears to be a burned and disconnected temp gauge wire.

Why would an '88 have heat wrap? It should have a shield, like heavy duty aluminum foil.

The crossover could have cracked at the Y like Roger's Formula did. The honeycomb heat shield has to be removed to repair it. That usually destroys the shield.
