Exorbitant Charges
« on: January 10, 2017, 10:06:37 pm »
From time to time, I see posts on PFF of people complaining about this vendor or that vendor and their exorbitant shipping charges.  Some of them seem to take their queue from some of the TV "But Wait!  We'll send you a free one, just pay shipping" ads where you get one can for $19 but shipping and handling for the second is $80.

Today, I ordered some small button cell batteries for my hearing aid.  The originals for the device were # 1154 and would last 2 or 3 weeks of continuous use.  I couldn't find them, so I've been using the equivalent, #357.  They only last  few days.  I went online and was looking for 1154's and found them listed along with my hearing aid.  They were available in an 8-pack from Amazon for about $0.50 per battery.  I ordered 2 cards with regular free shipping with estimated arrival between Jan. 23 and Jan. 30.  But if I want them to arrive before Jan. 23, shipping is $18 and change.  But the real kicker was that if I want them here in two days, the shipping cost was $35 and change.

Also, today, UPS delivered a package to Melanie.  Shipped from Grainger in Fountain Inn, SC.  The box is a 12 x 9 x 6.  The content was something for one of her medical devices.  It contained a blister card with 2 AAAA batteries.  Who knows how much it cost to ship that box and all the packing paper.

Because Melanie isn't often able to go shopping, she does a lot of online purchases.  Huge boxes with practically nothing in them are commonplace when coming from WalMart or Amazon.  Anyone else have similar experiences?

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Look on the bright side.  Your grandkids will have fun with the box and any packing material.

I often think that they know shipping costs will be covered, so choose the largest convenient box available.  Amazon defaults to paid shipping--you muse choose free shipping.  I've been trying to buy an EGR valve cover.  $122.xx for shipping.  I could drive there and back for less.  TFF shipped me 2 screws for the 3rd brake light.  $30!

Received a box yesterday.  About 18x4x11”.  Contents?  A 4” flashlight, and some aired up plastic packing.  Late delivery, due to ”large size”.  Shipping ($17) was refunded.
