Parking lights compatibility?
« on: September 28, 2017, 08:20:36 pm »
On my way to work this morning, there was a 4Runner behind me.  I happened to look at the parking lights/turn signals, and saw that they looked similar to the European Fiero parking light combo.  I've been looking for a set for my Fiero, so I looked up on ebay.  The first thing I found was some clear lenses that looked remarkably like those for the Fiero.  The 2-bulb layout could be interesting, because the Fiero is a bit tight in that area, but I'm wondering if anyone has tried this.

Toyota's technology trailed the Fierio, so these are in the 92-95 4Runner.

They do look remarkably like the Fiero pieces.
Are they two bulb setups? I didn't look through every one. I saw one bulb and one... empty port?

I think BTR is doing clear Fiero lenses again. IIRC, they are quite inexpensive.
I was working on some, but I can't beat their price for the quality.

The one following me was 2-bulb.

The thing about BTR is that their site is now almost impossible to use.

I don't know if BTR uses the same source as TFS did for the clear lenses, but has anyone tested the lenses from BTR?  Those from TFS tended to separate from the housing.

I'm also curious about the amber lenses TFS sells.  I didn't care for the stock lenses having that dingy look to them.  Do the amber TFS lenses have a brighter appearance and stay together better than their clear lenses did?

I don't know about any of the repros, other than the original Fiero Store clear ones.
I had a lens to fall off of one of those, but it just dropped down into the "pocket". Epoxied it back on. It's not coming back off, again.

Well, I got one of the single-bulb toyota light assemblies.  In hindsight, I should've gotten a dual-bulb assembly, but I was going for dimensions.  The following pics are provided as a comparison between the TFS and toyota light assemblies.

Assemblies side by side.  You can see the difference in colors.  The one on the left is the TFS assembly, and the lens is held on by glue, then screwed into place.  The toyota unit has alignment tabs.

There are alignment tabs on the back of the toyota unit.  The electrical connector does not come loose from the toyota unit.  The toyota unit is about .25" wider, and thus would not fit without modifications.

You can see that the toyota lens is deeper than the TFS unit.

The units are almost identical heights.

The toyota unit has an angled lens.

The TFS unit has a flat lens.

The toyota unit is sealed, while the TFS unit takes a twist-to-lock light socket.  The toyota unit is secured by a screw from behind.

My conclusion is that the toyota lenses are not compatible with a stock parking light assembly, due to the larger size, and the light socket/wiring differences.  While the screw threads could be changed to machine screws for the Fiero, the mounts do not match up.

Edit: I'm not sure how the angled lens would work on a Fiero.  I suspect that the light would be more down than forward, which would be good on an SUV, but bad on a low-slung vehicle like the Fiero.

Mounting isn't really an option, due to size fitment issues.

both the toyota and the Fiero housings are angled in the back.  Does the Fiero housing angle toward the inside of the Fiero, or the outside?
