Front Wheel
« on: November 07, 2017, 04:30:53 pm »
My front wheels seem to change position after raising the front end and letting it back down.  Noticed the front wheels not aimed the same.  Jacked it up to loo at both sides and say nothing.  Set the car back down and they looked ok.  Drove it and the seemed to be ok.  Just noticed that they are off again.  Need any ideas as to what to attack

Any time the car is lifted up, the wheels camber out at the top.  Front and rear do the same thing.  When you let it back down, the tire won't slide on the pavement so it sits cambered out until the car moves.  That's part of the reason alignment machines have the pads that move when the car is lifted and lowered.  Even on the alignment rack, factory recommends jouncing the front end up and down at least 3 times each time the front wheels are lifted off the rack in order for it to settle back into normal geometry.

You can check most of the suspension parts by lifting each wheel underneath the lower control arm.  Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and alternate pushing and pulling in opposite directions of the top and bottom.  Do the same at 3 and 9 o'clock.  Loose ball joints and tie rod ends can be felt by doing this.

If you feel you might need alignment or an inspection, see Mike McDonnell at Northlake Automotive on LaVista Road.  He's one of our members and has a brand new alignment machine.

I could see what your saying about  the wheel tilting out at the top.  But this looks like the wheels are not tracking side to side.  The wheel is pointed out.

If your Fiero is an 88, the alignment is set by the position of the cross shaft that holds the upper control arm.
The two bolts that hold the cross shaft are bolted through slotted holes in the front cradle, next to the spring pocket.
The position of the cross shaft can be changed by loosening the bolts, and moving the cross shaft around, to different positions in the slots.

I have had several instances of the bolts being loose, and allowing the control arm shaft - and control arm - to "walk around".
It usually happens when you change directions (forward to reverse, or vice versa) and then turn the wheel or stab the brakes.
It usually makes a solid "thunk" noise under the car when it happens.

If it's an earlier car, the alignment is set by adding or removing washers on the upper control arm shaft, or by rotating the upper ball joints.
If that is what is moving around, I'm thinking worn bushings or worn something else.

Exactly what Fierofool said to test the ball joints and tie rods.

Well here is where the wheel problem stands.  Turned the steering wheel right to left a couple of time and the wheels straighted out.  So you guys were right.  Will keep a eye on them to make sure it doesnt come back.  But still have a problem with a slight shimmy at the steering wheel.  Will take it in to see if there is a problem with front end alignment.  Thanks to all that responded to the post
