Anyone ever hear of an '84 Turbo Pace Car?
« on: June 21, 2018, 01:53:35 pm »
Anyone ever hear of an '84 Turbo Pace Car?

I was researching on NADA and they listed "Turbo Pace Car" under 1984 Fiero models.
I've heard of Indy Pace Cars.  Was the Turbo something else or did - GASP! - NADA get something wrong?
Are SD4's turbo-charged?

Well, sortof.  The one PPG car, and the 2 2.9's.  I thought one of the SD4's was, also, but can't find the info.

See here.

Not really 1984's, though.  Remember that article we discussed, a few months ago?

Unless NADA is talking about one of the "one-off", heavily modded Pace Cars that seem to pop up from time to time. The ones with SD4s and DGP body panels.
If not, then they got it wrong.

Edit - I forgot about the PPG cars. There were four (maybe five?) of those, as I recall. One was destroyed or went missing. Fred Bartemeyer owns two, or maybe three of the others.  If he doesn't own the last one, someone close to him does. They are frequently displayed together.

There were 6.  3 were destroyed.  Fred owns 2.  The blue one belongs to Ed.

There is at least 1 SD4 with a turbo.

Okay. I'll take your word.

Still... I don't see how NADA could put a price on them, since they are all in private collections. I still think they messed up.

It's all academic.  None were ever for sale or in production.  There is no consistency, no way to tell what is original.

Not my word.  Fred's.  Read the provided link, above.  There are 6.  I had thought there were 5, too.  If you scroll toward the bottom of this page, you can see pictures of all 6.

Well. Duh. I have never been accused of being (an) academic, so there you go.

I think that's actually the thread I read, before. Was working from memory. I overlooked that you had posted a link. (They're very pale, on this forum, or at least on my screens.)

I still think NADA is confused.

The intake was an option available for the Indy.

NADA is clueless.
The only option they list for an Indy is a "Turbo Pace Car".
If you backtrack to the main 84 Fiero page, the options dropdown list includes "305 V8" and "Recaro Trans Am" options.
They clearly are pulling things out of... a dark place.

The 1984 Pontiac 2000 Sunbird was available with an optional 1.8 liter turbo 4. I wonder if any pace car Fieros got one of those?

I've noticed the options are ... clueless... so I've been ignoring them in Fiero Appreciation articles.
I like to think retail values will be consistently wrong for all makes and models.

Didn't the 85 Indy Pace Car have a 4-cylinder with turbo?  It was an Oldsmobile Calais and the street version had the Iron Duke.  It's possible that it may have had the SD4, too.  The only two actual pace cars built were convertibles and weren't street legal.  They were sold to a private museum in California without title so they can't be registered.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Based on the info I have, no, but there are 2 or more Fieros with that engine, now.
