Anyone know about Fiero convertibles?
« on: June 22, 2018, 07:49:25 am »

Here's another one of 'those' questions.   :o

Fieros were offered as convertibles by at least two dealerships as an aftermarket/dealer option.  One dealership was in Florida and the other was in Indiana(?).

Any idea how many dealer conversions were produced?

I've read about 80 for each dealership, which would make 160.  However, I cannot believe California dealerships wouldn't get involved.

So, does anyone have information on convertible Fiero production or know where I can find information?

I'm looking for things like production numbers, cost, quality, etc.

Most of the convertible conversions for Fieros were done by a company called Automoda. Among other things, the car required braces underneath that looked like this:

Who owns the one in the photos?  It's beautiful.

Are you saying dealerships around the U.S. contracted Automoda to do all the conversions?

That car was at the Fiero 25th Anniversary. I don't know who owns it.

I don't know about the relationship between Automoda and dealers, but here's their brochure:

I was fortunate enough to own an Automoda for a short period of time.
I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, if I can.
FWIW... I found it to be noisy, rattly, and leaky. This, in spite of extra bracing, in the form of a steel "C channel", having been added to the rockers.
But it sure was purdy.

Raydar,  I'm mostly interested in who did the conversions, initial costs, and resale/current values.  I recall the '84 handmade conversion you had for sale a few years ago.  Looked great.

Fiero convertibles are about as rare as MERAs.  I'm surprised there isn't any documentation.  Then again, there isn't much documentation on MERAs either.

Holland Pontiac in Holland, Michigan bought a big batch of blue 87's and made convertibles out of them.  I think they were all based on the SE's and not GT's due to the initial cost factor.

Most of the ones I've seen were base cars. Only a few SEs.

How do you know this?
Is there a source on-line?

You can probably find some information on PFF.  From time to time, there has been photos and discussions.  It may be in the archives by now.

The first image of the blue convertible leads to the registry.  In the second row is Fierfly in her 84 and in the 3rd row is the Automoda that Steve owned.

Thanks for the info.  Surprised this subject isn't better documented.
