Earth to Fiero...come in Fiero
« on: January 27, 2019, 07:27:45 am »
Hello chaps,

Whilst enjoying a lie down under the Fiero, I noticed a wire attached to the left hand rear of the car.  It's attached to the side right next to the top of the rubber coolant hose that joins the front to rear coolant pipe... Inboard of the rubber mud flap thingy.  Above it I can see the slave cylinder.

The best my colour blindness can work out is that the wire is black.

T'other end of this wire is flapping around doing noubt.  I don't know if this is a standard earth wire or where it should live. Can anyone help please and thank you.

Cheers
PK

This is the common place that Scotland Yard attaches their antenna for the hidden microphone, hidden camera and GPS when you're being tracked.   :D

That is a heavy ground (earth) wire that is so often overlooked when the cradle is dropped, and subsequently ends up just flapping around.

One end is attached to a threaded stud on the frame rail.  The other end has an eyelet that is secured by one of the transmission to engine bolts on a manual transmission car.  I'm not sure what it attaches to on an automatic but it should attach to some part of the engine or transmission.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Normally, in the US, the FBI does that, but I've heard they are low on funds. :D

Haaaaaa brilliant thanks FF.  It would have made very boring viewing for the passed few years as it hasn't really moved!!

Apologies meant to mention it's an 86 V6 4speed.

It is as you say anchored to a stud.  The wire looks its age and as you describe has an eyelet t:other end which is not attached.  I didn't really want to undo anything to attach the eyelet until I knew the correct location.  Hmm maybe cradle was dropped sometime before my ownership!  I know that wire hasn't been attached for at least 20 years as the eyelet hasn't broken and no bolts are missing!!

Scotland yard will be delighted, I now have a beautiful new earth cable.  Not sure where its exact original location was but it looks like at some point the coolant crossover pipe had a bracket cut off, leaving a space on the grrrr box for my earth lead.

See FFs post.

Scotland yard is a wonderful place.....nowhere to park.  Everything by appointment and if you arrive in reception 30 seconds early you will be told to exit and come back 30 seconds later!!!

Why would you go to Scotland yard?

I've often wondered if maybe I should get an Abrams or a Panzer, to help remind people to be more courteous on the roads.  Of course, they would probably be so busy playing with their TV that they'd miss seeing the turret.  Certainly parking would be no problem, because you could easily use it to correct the parking of those who cannot get their bicycle-sized cars entirely into a full-sized parking space.

On the way to work today, someone was tailgating me.  I was wishing for a straight-pipe with a spark plug at the end to give him a warm feeling, but then traffic slowed.  I let off the throttle, and the guy hit me.  My trailer hitch went through his grille and radiator.  Oh, darn.  No damage on my truck, excapt maybe less chrome on the ball.  A COP saw the whole thing.  He told me to go, and I did.  No police report for me, but that guy probably won't learn.
