Well, when you're that close to Emerald Village, you have to expect lions, tigers, and bears.  Oh, my!

This was a bit of a reversal, though, because the conveyances were yellow, rather than the road.

Ditto on the first gear turns. Too bad about the unpaved section. I hope as much of that road as possible gets included.

What you see is what we got.  We did have a couple of what I always heard called Sun Showers.  The sun was shining bright but it was raining.  Only lasted for about a minute each time but a couple of times was hard enough that I rolled up the windows and turned on the wipers at regular speed. 

BTW, the name of the town is Spruce Pines, NC. 

There's no way I can work in the last half of that road without turning everyone around in someone's driveway, then I would still need to plug in a path back to the hotel.  I already have that selected and will soon modify the route sheet. 

Solstice and Sky owners have joined us in other events but not RFTH.  They were set up just as a joint adventure.  A Sky owner friend of mine joined us a couple of years ago in a scouting run.  Warwoman and The Rattler. 

Due to some difficulties with part of the route, I'd like to do another partial scouting run if I can get someone to go along.  Maybe in August.

That would be a good starting place.  Straight up I-26 to US 19 over to Spruce Pine.  Leaving at 7 it's a 3.5 hr drive that would put us in right at lunch time.

I thought it would be funny to have Smokey and the Bandit do their thing during RFTH, but apparently not.  First, it's too far from CA, where the cars are; second, the truck driver said he can't go there; third, "Smokey" can't legally wear the uniform (something about impersonating an officer); fourth, it seems that NC is not on the way between TX and GA.

Actually, the Trans-Am is a 2011, I believe, and is in Alabama right now, but the squad car is in CA.

The road I had to eliminate had some turns like that, but not the elevation.  There were no guardrails but there were trees on both sides of the roadway, so if you happened to run off the road, you wouldn't end up back at the bottom of the mountain.

So... Although I've owned a few Fieros over the years, learned to drive stick in my Dad's 86 SE, bought my first Fiero in 89. I recently passed my last one down to my son and am Fieroless for the first time in many years.  I've read about your event for years and always wanted to attend but never made it.

I currently drive a Solstice and belong to a small group of Solstice and Sky owners from the Raleigh area.  I'm hoping me and my son can join you this year and possibly a few more folks from around here.  Would a contingent of Solstice and Skys be welcome to join you?

Vincent, have your group start making their reservations and placing their Tshirt orders.  I may have to block out extra rooms so we can have everyone at the same hotel.  Even from Raleigh, I would discourage trying to drive in on Saturday morning and trying to make the run.  It's heart-pounding and a real workout.  You will need a good night's rest and also you will need to be sure your car is fully serviced on Friday night. 

We can take Tshirt orders up until Sept. 13.  They will only be delivered at the event at the price we list.  After that, shipping will be added. 

You won't be alone.  I don't know how many but I'm told that some Kappa folks are coming down from the Chicago area this year.

Watch the scouting run thread.  We need to do the last half of the route to be sure it's good.
