A Fierolier? A Cavaliero?
« on: May 12, 2019, 09:28:17 am »
There is a guy in the area who has what looks to me like a 2-door Cavalier.  I never thought anything of it, until he dropped the engine from the REAR.

At that point, I noticed that it has a hatch, rather than a trunk.  It has no rear seats, and has a window behind the driver.  It was pouring rain, but the guy says it's a newer version of my car (Fiero).

The Cavalier never came in rear-wheel drive, or in mid/rear-engine configuration.  The fact remains, there is no engine anything in the front of this car.  It looks as if someone mounted a Fiero rear into a Cavalier.

That seems like a lot of work.  If I was going to do such a thing, I'd have used a Firebird, or a Corvette.

To be accurate, the engine that came out of the Cavalier is not a Fiero engine, and did not look as if it came out of a Fiero.  There appeared to be a cradle, and the transmission is there.  I was looking from a bit of distance.

I'm just saying, but surely buying a Fiero would be a far better/easier/cheaper idea than converting a Cavalier to a mid-engine vehicle.

The 80's Cavalier had essentially the same 2.8 engine as the Fiero.  I don't know how the front cradle compared.  Maybe the rear mount was just for engineering accomplishments.  It would have been neat to have left one in the front and one in the back, though.

This is about a 2002 Cavalier.  The intake is different, whatever it is.

I believe all the Cavaliers after around 89~90 were 4 cylinder.  Some of the earlier ones had the 2.8, same as the Beretta, except the horsepower was downsized compared to the Beretta.  It had a completely different intake than the Fiero, but it had 2.8 MultiPort FI on it.

I'll see if I can get a look.  The engine is back in the car.

As it occurs to me, he pulled the engine, and left the rear wheels.  I'm fairly sure the wheels were on the ramps.  I guess that could be done on the Fiero, but dunno how the axles would come out.

There are not vents on the sides, nor on top.  Darned if I know how it cools itself.

Maybe he was carrying a spare engine in the trunk. ;)

The Fiero engine can be pulled out the top, leaving the transmission and axels in place.

Only 450 hours?  Well, they obviously didn't do this in a day.

My question is, would you consider doing it again?  I have no interest in such a thing, but I meant for you personally.  If you went back in time to when you were making the decision, what would you tell yourself?

Yeah I'm answering old threads that I was too lame to answer at the time....
My projects usually get started when I have some parts accumulated & an inspiration, or trade for something cool that I'd like to build. In the case of the Cabrio, I needed a front bumper for one I owned after hitting a deer & only bumper I could find was $450 + shipping from Ca., sight unseen. I found this car locally for that price, & always liked them (the Wolfsburg editions) except for three things: 1) front wheel drive; 2) the top stuck up too far when down; & 3) not really enough power (although it was quite capable in traffic). I had some time at the moment so - since I had the car & had to sell the other one - decided to build it correcting those three things, with parts that I mostly had on hand (fiero drivetrain & a buddy had the 283).
Plus I'm an artist & I MUST create or I get stir crazy.
So yes I would do it again at the time, wouldn't start it today with all the other projects I have & since I'm getting too old for this sh*t.  ;D But if I didn't have other projects.... ::)
