Discovered the gas pedal in the 88 is broken and so is the pedal on the parts car..... anyone have a spare?

Don't press the pedal so hard.  Out of curiosity, where does the pedal break?  At the arm?

There is a retainer molded in the plastic that breaks

No, there is a retainer that holds it against the spring pressure. It is hard to explain but is obviuos when you look at the back of the pedal
