Caliper hex bolt stripped
« on: September 19, 2019, 01:35:50 pm »
I have one stripped hex bolt and no success removing it. I cannot bleed the brakes because the bleed screw is stripped. I have a replacement caliper ready to go in. Tired of messing with all the crusty rust all over and in every nut and bolt. Will I need to remove the whole assembly?

Do you mean the caliper slider bolt inside the rubber dust boot?  The two that holds the caliper onto the spindle?  It probably isn't a hex allen head bolt.  Standard slider bolts were a Torx head.  #50, I think.  Trying to use a standard allen wrench in them can damage them, but there might be enough left that the proper torx bit would still work.

2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

On my truck, once those bolts were out, I replaced them with better nolts, but have not tried that on the Fiero.

When my caliper bolts got stuck on a previous Fiero, I used a special bit that would bite into the bolt head.  I drove that into the bolt head, and used an impact wrench to remove the nolt.  PB Blaster may have helped.

The caliper bolts are T55 torx bolts. Was just into mine last week.

Earlier cars use smaller bolts than the 88. Think my 84 used allen head bolts instead of torx. But I still don't have any ides for removal, other than maybe drilling the head off of the bolt, sliding the caliper off, then grabbing what's left with vice grips (after soaking with PB Blaster or similar, overnight.)
