I found this out the hard way. I had some spare heater cores. One of the heater cores did not have caps on the tubes. When I recently tested the core, the core had apparently corroded internally. Oops.
So, cap off your spare cores.

If you could store them with the tubes upright, it might also help to fill the with some coolant.
