Another question >.< (or two)
« on: October 02, 2009, 12:44:19 pm »
This must be getting annoying since I haven't been able to come to a club event even once, but gas is killing me -_- so here goes:

'84 3800 Series 1 swap with TH125c trans that is having horrible gas millage (16/18 mpg) and doesn't seem to want to crank...Have to try a few times while turning the key and even then it wont start unless the throttle is played with a bit while doing so, have replaced nearly every sensor on the engine, along with the entire throttle body and its still giving me issues. Spark plugs and wires are new as well. Anyone have an idea? My last possible hopes here are the computer and the anti-theft key that was installed (hoping that its the key and that it just has a bad connection.)

Also, the cylinders tend to flood and backfire while attempting to start. The car eventually will crank, but sometimes it will take me nearly half an hour to get it to do so...Its quite annoying and embarrassing.

On another note, if anyone has experience with Cyberdyne gauges malfunctioning and found a way to fix it, please tell me. My tach and temp gauges basically don't work, the tach will suddenly drop down to nothing for seemingly no reason and the temp will say 130 when the fan kicks in at 190. Plan on calling the company but last time I had an issue they ran me around in circles saying "you installed it incorrectly" despite everything being done properly.

Don't know anything about that particular engine, but if it's a distributor engine with a coil, try replacing the ignition coil.  My brother had similar happenings with his, and that was the solution.  Of course, after we changed out all the things you mentioned, too.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

It's possible you could have bad electrical grounds causing all of your problems. Loosen and re-tighten all ground connections to clean off corrosion.
The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

I assume you've already replaced the crank sensor, and the cam sensor? And the fuel pump relay? If so you might just need a little twikking of your computer. Give me a call sometime and I'll hook you up with Derek, he's our programmer and wiring expert. 423-506-0594 Rob

Thanks guys,

Cam sensor was just replaced....Trying to remember if Ive done the crank.... Fuel pump relay? I did awhile back but its slightly off on its ohms so that could very well be the problem.

Transmission just started slipping BADLY today, 3rd gear practically doesn't exist.... I'm up a creek without a paddle now Gentlemen. :'( Hopefully it doesn't look too bad in there...Then again its basically the only thing I haven't replaced on the car so it probably looks like a train wreck and putting the 4T60e in now is..... Ludicrous really.

I'd fix the starting problem before changing the trans.

Going to open up the trans before I try and replace it anyway...See if changing the filter and fluids helps at all.
