As many of you know, my Fiero has mostly LED lighting. After seeing a recent post, I thought it a good idea to test.
My front side marker LEDs are amber. Nothing special. No modifications. The rears are the same, except red. Nowhere have I modified sockets, used ballast resistors, or run things to make the LEDs run current in different directions. This was all deliberate. I could pull out the existing lighting and change back to incandescent, with no one the wiser. I do have electronic blinker/hazard relays.
For the test, I left the parking lights off, but turned on the blinker. The front and rear turn signals blinked, along with the indicator on the dash, and the front side markers, as expected.
Years ago, when the lighting change was being implemented, I did have some issues; however, these issues were all resolved when I changed the blinker/hazard relays to electronic, and subsequently replaced the third brake light with LED lighting. I believe everything must work together.
Conclusion, you do not need special LED's on the front turn signals. Also, LEDs in the front turn signals can work properly.
I have found that people tend to try to get cheap LEDs. You get what you pay for. I do not recall what I paid for mine, but have no regrets. For the relays, I used specific relays. One of the two relays will not work for either the hazard lights or the blinkers. I'm not sure about the other relay. I had tried the first relay for both, and it only worked for one thing. The other relay has a ground wire, and does work properly.
There you have it.
