Replacement Weatherstrips and Trim
« on: July 12, 2020, 07:14:52 pm »
As the title states, I'm looking to replace the weatherstripping and trim. The trim I'm referring to is the plastic trim around the GT quarter panel windows and above doors. As for Weatherstrips, I know the FieroStore has a set but I wasn't sure if there's a better and/or cheaper alternative. Any help is appreciated!

I'm guess you mean the black drip rail that runs along the edge of the roofline from the area behind the side mirror all the way to the back edge of the GT quarter window?  That rail is made of metal.  I don't know if it's steel or aluminum, but when the coating comes off, it remains shiny.

No one makes those.  The only source for replacements is from another car or if somone has a spare set.  You could send them off to a powder coater or a paint shop.  When my car was repainted, Jon Champagne in Douglasville stripped and repainted mine.  Whatever method, the finish should be baked on and not just sprayed and air dried.

Off and on, some other people make dew wipes.  Cheaper, not really.  You don't want cheap for those.  TFS' dew wipes were good quality, last round.  I see that they now have a new batch.  Likely the same quality as the last batch.

My mistake, the drip rail as you called it, was quite flexible so I figured it was a plastic like the rest of the trim pieces. It was starting to come up in a few places on the driver's side so I was just going to replace it. Since they're not too common, I'll just have it repainted as you suggested. How do you go about securing it? Do you use an adhesive because in the area around the quarter windows there aren't any fasteners unless I'm missing them. Thanks

The channel itself is one large fastener that pinches the roof and rear panel.

As Zach said, it attaches itself.  In the flange that inserts under the roof line, there are small slits, like a louver.  They're supposed to bite into the underside of the roofline, but when the rail is removed, they usually cut that area away.  I have had success with inserting a small screwdriver blade into them and opening them a little more.  Some have added some spots of windshield setting tape or RTV to help hold it.

There is just 1 clip at the rear end of the drip rail.  It's a steel clip that fits into the end of the drip rail and slips up underneath the flying buttress.  The usual area where the rail comes loose is at the front tip, behind the mirror.  If you can keep that part tucked in, the rest usually stays put, providing the clip is in place in the rear.  That clip kind of rolls in, then the rail is inserted underneath the roofline, working toward the front.

That is for the Fastback.  The Notchback attaches similarly, but I don't know how it terminates at the rear end.
