We replaced an axle....

Sometimes it tales a lot of hands to make something fit.

We also got Scott's 4.9 running. It was a bad ICM.

That was Larry's axle. Great meeting yesterday. Larry's axle, Charlie's tear down on his failed motor, pulling to 4 speed, and hearing Scott's car come to life.

I dunno!  What is that?  I don't think I want to touch that.   :)

Almost back together.  Now that wasn't so bad, was it?

Nicely done everyone! Things are changing for me at the Aquarium so I might be more able to attend soon.

I want to say thanks to everyone who came out yesterday. I'm glad that I could help Larry get his axle changed, that would have taken a couple of days to do that off of Jackson's.

Also need to thank Roger and Pat for helping with my Formula. Its starts with every turn of the key now.

Gabe, you left your ball cap at my shop.

Charlie has a few more parts to take to Pat's off of his blown engine.

All in all a good day at the shop

We replaced an axle....

It looks as if the axle was rubbing the splash shield, which looks torn in the middle.

Yes, thanks to everyone who attended and provided tools, parts, advice, enthusiasm and muscle on the job.

I had a leaking axel seal and an odd on off the throttle stutter/thunk that I thought might be a axel going bad causing  collaterally the leaking seal.  Charlie provided a  known good used axle to help. I haven't driven it much since but the leak is gone but there is still a little thump/stutter every so often, it is better so possibly the left axel is bad as well.   I think the car may have been in deep water at one point and possibly the axles boots may have let in water.

That shield is on the trunk wall and pretty far from the axle.  I noted the rub through but not sure how it happened.  The rest of the car looks pretty good underneath, all shields in place.  Oddly someone painted the bottom.  It's more than just overspray from when the topside was painted a long time ago.  Very little corrosion and no real rust except behind some of the engine compartment insulation under the heat grills that let in and trap water.

Larry,

With the experience I got working on your car, I changed the passenger axle and seal on my car today. Only took about an hour.

How long did it take, on TAD's car?

My biggest axle challenges were finding a socket that size, and getting the axle to sit right in the knuckle.

When my brother and I changed the axel on my 87, it took about 3 hours after we got the car on jackstands and the wheel removed.  I directed my brother on what to do and he did the removal and install of the axel.

I did the seal and the hub replacement and he did all the reassembly as I directed him.  It may have gone a little faster because it wasn't the first one I had done, and we didn't have a couple of guys poking around and interrupting nor did we have 3 dozen donuts to dispose of.

My theory is that both axles have the same mileage, so likely need to be replaced in pairs, for wear issues.

I agree but they are arriving in separate shipments. Driver's side should be here tomorrow.
