Wheel bearing vs axle bearing
« on: December 14, 2020, 08:48:05 pm »
I thought there was a topic where this was discussed, but couldn't find it.  It did not seem as if wheel bearings and axle bearings could be the same thing, despite what I had bern told, so I did some research.

Per what I was told, these are not the same thing.

Wheel bearings sit outside the axle, and allow the assemble to turn.  There are other names.  Wheel bearings can be taken apart, lubed, and reassembled.  The axle goes into a piece that sits inside the bearing.  Wheel bearings are used on the front wherls of most vehicles.

Axle bearings are used in vehicles that have a rear differential and axles.  Think the rear of a pickup truck.  The axle bearings sit inside the axle.

There some fine points I omitted, but this is how the difference was explained to me.

Wheel bearings rotate around an axle.
Axle bearings are stationary and the axle rotates within the bearing.

2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers
