Running out of fuel or air
« on: December 23, 2020, 05:01:49 pm »
So I’ve noticed at 4,000 RPM I’m running out of fuel or air. I’ve run plenty of cleaner through but I know I need to rebuild the tbi and change the fuel filter.

First off where is the fuel filter on the 88 2.5? I haven’t crawled underneath yet.

Second, can you get a slightly bigger injector?

Should I be looking for other problems

I know Pat said it runs out of air at 4500 but this feels too soon.

The lower end doesn't like revs over 4500, either.  The 88 is a little more forgiving due to the counterbalance shafts.

The fuel filter is mounted onto the back firewall near the rear end of the fuel tank on the V6's, but it's inline right there at the air cleaner on the Duke.  Left side right in plain view toward the left end of the engine.  Could be part of your problem if there's no filter.  Sediment is getting through to the injector.

Yes, L4 fuel filter is very visible and accessible.  Right on top.

You don't need a larger injector even if one is available.  The one you have is enough to support any HP gains you might get from it.  The O-2 sensor will tell it to kick in more fuel if it starts to lean out.

In the image below, the fuel filter is slightly below the middle, on the left side.

You need to get that thing hooked up to a computer to see what's going on.

If you are looking for a larger injecctor, one from one of these cars might flow a little more.  The throttle bodies are interchangeable with the 87 and 88.

'87-88 2.5L Throttle bodies from the following will fit:

   Buick Skylark       '87  2.5L
   Buick Somerset      '87  2.5L
   Olds Calais         '87  2.5L
   Pontiac Grand Am    '87  2.5L

I would like an entire TBI to play with. My friend want to try to enlarge the intake.
