RFTH # 26 Scouting Run
« on: January 25, 2021, 09:35:38 pm »
The first RFTH 26 scouting run is going to be April 17.  We have two possible route choices with the first half being the same for each.

Both routes will start in Clayton, Ga.  One route will return to Clayton while the other will take a different leg after we have our lunch, and that alternate route will end in Asheville, NC.  The last half of either will have new roads we've not used before.  Should we decide to stay overnight in Asheville before returning home, Ralph has arranged for some deep, deep discount room rates, but he only has 2 rooms available at those rates.  Doubling up in rooms can still bring about a good rate for each individual.

The current plan is to do the Clayton to Asheville route on April 17.  Then on a later date, return to our lunch stop and do the last half of the loop that returns us to Clayton.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

You might want to put this on the calendar.

I am in too. Gabe and I will be roommates. With Charlie going that leaves one open bed in the deeply discounted room.

I'm willing to let others have the discounted rate room if it will entice them to go.  I'll split a regular rate room with someone.

I have to plot the timeline of the run.  It may be that we will arrive in Asheville with ample time to return home.  We've done that several times, one of those times running a similar route from Clayton to Asheville.

Just a thought.  We hope to have lots of people from out of town.  Many of them may not be close enough to drive home afterward.

It's 4 Hours 15 Minutes from Clayton to our lunch stop.  Add 1 hour for lunch, then a quick fuel stop.

From our lunch stop to the Hilton Homewood Suites in Asheville, which is next door to the Steakouse we used for dinner at our last stay in Asheville, travel time is 2 hours.

So, total from Clayton to Asheville is 7 Hours.  We can make that 8 to give us a margin.  Leaving Clayton at 9AM, we would arrive in Asheville at 5PM.

From Asheville to the I-85, I-285 interchange return trip is 3 Hours 15 Minutes.  Add a 30 minute gas stop and that would put us back about 9PM.  It probably would be best that we stay in Asheville, overnight.

For you guys anywhere North, South, or West of Atlanta, it would be best that we stay overnight.

When we do the alternate route that will bring us from our lunch stop in Canton, NC, back to Clayton, the last half is 3 Hours to Clayton  Though we would initially go through Clayton, we would take a more direct and faster route to begin the second half in Canton.  That would only take 1 Hour 30 Minutes from Clayton to Canton, NC.

Any ideas on a Tshirt design, yet?

Also thinking that part of the draw is to get to see other Fieros and Fiero people.  More people may be interested in the event if they get more out of it.

T-shirt?  Put a Fiero on it!  Actually, is there a scenic view?

There are 6 overlooks on our short section of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  I believe only maybe 2 of those offer a good background view if the cars were parked at the edge.

I’m going to bring my knock off go pro and attach it to the car. Hope it looks as good as I expect.

That'll be good practice for the actual run.

Maybe I missed it, but will RFTH be on the third or fourth weekend, this year?

Dunno if this impacts RFTH or not, but I read that masks are now required on the BRP, supposedly to preserve the forests for generations to come.  I have never heard of trees getting COVID.
