Auburn Car Show
« on: March 17, 2021, 10:10:12 am »
The Parks and Recreation Director is proposing to revive the Auburn Car Show that Georgia Fieros started back in the early part of the century.  I'll know more about it tomorrow night after the council workshop.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Well... for some of us, I suppose.

That works for lots of things...but no one drives up here.

I don't need much of an excuse.  We go all over.

The initial presentation tonight was that a local car club would like to hold a monthly show in downtown Auburn on the last Saturday (But I think they meant the 4th Saturday) of each month from April to October.  They said they usually have 60-70 cars show up at their shows.  The city will close off a 2 block area to pedestrian traffic, only.

In the downtown area, we have a Pizza restaurant, and then there are the Whistlestop Shops.  About a dozen small free-standing businesses that sell a wide variety of items from crafts and trinkets to food to clothing.  Something for the ladies if they get bored with cars.

Named by the students at Auburn Elementary, Whistlestop is located across from R.H. Burel Park and is a greenspace park with picnic tables, newly planted shrubbery, and beautiful pecan trees. Auburn residents love to come by to pick and eat pecans.  Whistlestop Park is also home to our Whistlestop Shops - microretailing opportunities for small businesses. Drop by today to visit or check out their website at https://whistlestopshops.com/our-stores   The shops are open 11am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.  I'm not sure about the ones listed as under construction.  I think the website hasn't been updated.  I do know all the shops are occupied.

The car club made a proposal to the city.  This was a workshop session where things are discussed but not voted on.  It won't be known if the proposal is accepted by the city until the first Thursday of April when the council holds its business session to publicly vote on matters.

I was surprised this morning to find the old Ingles parking lot full of cars.  I guess the council approved it in the back room.  Anyway, here's a little sampling of what their first show brought out.

There is a shortage of Fieros, but according to procedure, the council wasn't to vote on it until April and it isn't on the posted April Agenda.  Didn't know it was happening in March.

That silver chevy nova at the right, with the vinyl top, is the one that belonged to the son of one of the women who was handing out the ballots at one of the car shows after the city took it over.  He was only about 13 or 14.  It was a People's Choice car show with one ballot per person.  Someone said that the kid had a whole sticky pad of ballots and spent most of his time filling them out.  He won best of show.  His dad is no longer in charge of the show.
