reading the computer

Is there a way of converting OBD to read the fiero computer.
Plenty of OBD readers but very little for older cars

TopNotch and Raydar have scanners that read sensor info from the ECM, but I believe you have to interpret the information output.  Each Fiero came with that little diagnostic key that inserts into the ALDL.  I'm guessing GM intended that to be the primary diagnostic piece.

If you don't have the trouble code chart, look at the Pennock's Home Page.  On the left under ARTICLES, 2nd item down is the ECM Trouble Codes listing.  It gives a fair explanation of what each code means.

There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

...

Although it's not nearly as descriptive as an OBDII scanner, it does give English language descriptions of sensor data and trouble codes. It also displays long and short term fuel trim (BLM and Integrator)

Alan.. look for an Actron (not sure what model) or AutoXRay scanner. I've got an AutoXRay 6000 scanner that will read OBDII and the original OBD.
I'll see if I can find something suitable. I'm thinking you'll want to stick to sellers within AU, or maybe NZ. Correct?

Edit - I looked in AU. Nothing really useful.
This one is in the US. It's the same make/model that I have. (This is a good price. They were like $700 USD, new.)
He says that it powers up (has pictures) but that he doesn't know how to use it, so it's untested. Bought from an estate sale.

2nd Edit - This one looks like it might still be available. It looks to be as useful as the first one I posted. But it's a bit more money. But that might be for a new one.

Whatever you buy, make sure it's a "scanner" and not just a "code reader". A code reader is really no more useful than those metal keys (or a paperclip) that you stick into the connector in order to count flashes.
