Rattles over rough roads
« on: February 24, 2022, 10:32:00 am »

Car rattles whenever I go over a rough road.  IOW, whenever I leave my development.

Are there common area on Fieros that cause this?  Just trying to narrow down where to look.

Sounds like it's from the rear and metal on metal.

(Yes, I've taken everything out of the trunk -- which did help a bit)

If this is your 88, check the long bolts on the rear suspension.

Check clearance on the exhaust and cradle.  Be sure no exhaust support springs are missing.  I've had a bumping somewhere in the right side, sounds like in the area of the front cradle bolt.  It's been there since the first time I had it painted, maybe 12 years ago.  Haven't been able to find it.

2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Check the end link bushings on your rear sway bar. My end link bushings always seemed to crumble while the other bushings were still okay.
You might be able to tell if it's the exhaust by laying behind/under the rear of the car and pushing the exhaust system/muffler with your feet. See if it thumps against the cradle or trunk wall. I've had that happen before.

Considered that.  Emptied out all his stuff, which improved things, then brought along a passenger.  She said it wasn't me this time.

lol.

in other news, i had to park the car outside for a few months last year, there's some plants and bushes nearby, and my community had some snake spottings every year, so i was ALWAYS checking for any kind of sound or movement behind the seats, not an enjoyable feeling!

Not yet.  Got lazy and haven't looked very hard.  That, and I wonder if my stands were part of the Harbor Freight recall...

The rattle came from the sway bar links.

Car feels amazing.  Didn't think it could be improved this much.
