JUST AN FYI FOR THE TYBEE GROUP:
Swim in areas where we have Lifeguard towers. Our Ocean Rescue Guard towers are stationed in front of the north beach parking lot, at Center Street, and between 14th and 18th street on the south end of the beach near the Pier. Our guards are on duty in the chairs from 11 am to 7 pm on the weekends starting in April and continuing through September. Guards are also on duty during the weekdays until the end of September from 11 am to 5 pm.
- Do not walk onto the sand bar at low tide between Tybee's south end and Little Tybee Island. The sand bar looks very inviting when the tide is low but gets covered with water very quickly as the tide comes in. The area also has very strong currents that can quickly knock you off of your feet. Many people have lost their lives because they got caught out there as the tide came in. Please heed the warning signs that our City has placed in the area and avoid this sand bar.
- Also, as you drive on Tybee, be aware of pedestrians crossing Butler Avenue and Highway 80. We have designated crosswalks at all the numbered streets on Butler between 3rd and 16th street. State law dictates that if a pedestrian steps into the crosswalk, drivers in all four lanes of Butler MUST come to a stop. Failure to yield to pedestrians in a designated crosswalk comes with a minimum $260.00 fine. The last thing we want to do is give out tickets to drivers not aware of this law but more importantly, we do not want a family to experience a tragic accident that could have been prevented.
