New symptom; still leaking, then squeals, and the belt tears (third time now)
Water pump/alternator/harmonic balancer belt

How do the water pump and alternator feel when you turn them by hand?

Don, we may have to go back in and remove the water pump so we can get a better view in there.  It could be that the pulleys aren't lined up or that the water leak has gotten onto the belt and that will make is squeal.

Pat, the pump is brand new.  The alternator was swapped out for one from the parts car, so if it is still squealing, it wouldn't be in either of those.

What Charlie said  ;D

But to answer your question Pat, they turn easy, pump has just a bit of resistance, but they also turn real quiet, so I think it may be an allignment issue, or I just totally messed things up somehow when I installed the new water pump

Update:
Replaced the gasket/O-Ring in the thermostat housing, no more leak there
Installed a new (again) water pump, as I'm getting good at it. Again, the water pump is not leaking, but I stll have a leak somewhere in that area.
While the pump was out, I tried looking at the water pump mount/adapter and couldn't see anything, especially no leaks, so I'm pretty much lost now.

Whit Charlie's help, we first thought the leak was gone, but it started leaking again. Even though we got her high up off the ground and got underneath her, we couldn't find/pinpoint the leak. It has to be coming from the water pump adapter / mount, which I guess can only be mended / repaired by dropping the engine, which I can't do.

Except for the doors, all panels from my black parts car have been swapped. Might do the doors during this next week.
For once I ran into absolutely no issues all day taking the panels, fenders and roof off of the 84. Little feeling of success creeping up and making me all warm and fuzzy.

Still leaking though.

Still leaking though.

Is it still leaking a lot, or just a little? If just a little, have you considered adding stop leak? If it works, fine. If not, you're going to have to drop the engine anyway.

Seems you and Charlie think alike, he mentioned that also. Don't know if I'm really a fan of such additives, as I beleive a problem like that should normally be mended by replacing whatever is broken.
My fear is that the water pump mount on the block is cracked, which would account for 3 chewed-up belts since I've had it. A crack in the mount/adapter would possibly give enough tolerance, so that the pump no longer runs true to the other pullies and eventually fries the bearings and snaps the belt.
Found numerous people on Pennock's describing the the identical issues.

But in either case, you're right, the motor needs to come out, which I'm not capable of doing on my own. Like I mentioned before:
I'm smart enough to know how dumb I am.

And I'm still waiting on either Ashby or his son to get in touch with me, but I've just about given up on that. I'll try to find a local shop that's willing to do the work.

There's still an 86 at Pullapart in Lithonia that has the replacement part still on it.
