What all would I need for tranny swaps?
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:30:06 am »
I am considering  the following:
We have the 84 Duke with the MY8 econo
Probably getting an 85 V6 with an auto next week

I'd like to put the MY8 in the V6 and the automatic tranny in the 84 Duke. Obviously I have the shift assembly and shift cables for both cars, but what else would I need?
Or is this even advisable?

Any tips would be appreciated.

thnx

So...you have a V6 auto, and want to replace it with the MY8....then drop the auto into Anne's car, right?

First question is...why?  Does Anne really want an auto instead of the manual?  For the record...she was pulling away from me on the run...especially uphill.

The following could be swapped between two cars:
Steering column
brake pedal for brake/clutch pedals
ignition switch
shifter and cables
ignition switch lockout cable (goes from the auto shifter to the auto ignition cable)
Clutch line for the auto coolant lines
not sure if the radiators would swap properly....would probably want more coolant for the v6 than the 4cyl manual radiator can provide.
transmissions and mounts
torque converter for the clutch

Things you would need:
v6 manual wiring harness (or some wiring work on the one you have)
duke/auto wiring harness (or some wiring work on the one you have)
swap the starter wire in the C500 of the v6 (they are in the same location for auto and manual on the 84)
v6 flexplate
duke flywheel
v6 manual ecm
duke/auto ecm
a lot of time and patience

you would also have to run a wire from the brake to the C203 for the duke for the TCC
you would have to rewire the backup lights for the duke, and possibly the 85 (would have to look at wiring diagrams to see if the 85 would require it)

For the record...along with the engine work on the vert, I also rewired it for a "proper" auto swap....so that is all fresh in my memory.  I may have forgotten some details here though.

Thanks for the info Greg
To answer your question "why?":

Auto for the daughter in the Duke, manual in the V6 for Anne...... make sense now? ;D

Now just imagine how Anne could have done the RFTH with a V6.

But after seeing the long list of things that need to be done, I am contemplating.
Maybe just swap engines instead, although I keep hearing that the 84 is not a good candidate for an engine swap (i.e. cradle, harness a.s.o.)
I'll have to give this more thought.

This article has a detailed description of what is involved in putting a V6 in an 84 car.

I think the solution is to give the v6/auto to your daughter, and talk to Whodeanie about adding more power to Anne's car.
