2011 POLAR BEAR RUN.....
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:53:12 am »
....Sponsored by the Georgia Triumph Association.  This is a great event and it takes place no matter the weather.  There are hearty folk who drive open top roadsters in rain or below-freezing weather.  There are Allards, Rolls, Bentleys, and all manners of British vehicles as well as a good mix of American cars.  Through the years, Fieros have been well represented.

The Polar Bear Run is a meandering route which may cover 150 miles.  Mostly roads off the beaten path rather than a direct route.  Here's some information on the event.

Polar Bear Run
When:  Sat, December 31, 9am
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

I think if we do attend the run, we wouldn't spend the night up there though, as we already have festivities of our own planned for New Year's Eve in Buford with friends and family.

But Helen is always worth a trip.

Who in the club would be interested in going? Why not make it a club event? It would be nice to drive up there and back as a group.

Thoughts?

I plan to make the trip, have a bite to eat, then return.  I usually don't stay for festivities, but I did tour the Aviation Museum in Warner Robins and the Infantry Museum in Columbus in previous runs.

I think Anne and I could go for that.

We have a favorite restaurant up there that is about as close to authentic German food as it gets.

After we pick up a few imported goodies from Anne's homeland we could head straight back or use the same route. Either way, we could be back home in time for our own party.

Anyone else?

Roger, that's the starting time.  Be there by 9, leave by 10 after a short driver's meeting.   ::)

You see cars that are never out on the road.

Been doing this event for 3~4 years now.
Doing this event is a blast.

Charles, you going alone?
Seeing that I don't have a car worthy of the run, Do you need a navigator?

Drop me a line.

At the present time I'm planning on taking Melanie with me.  I'm going to do a trial run with the oxygen bottles in the trunk.  If that works out and if she's feeling good on the day of the run, she will go.  Ray may have an empty seat.  I'll ask him, if you'd like to ride with him.  Or, we could swap out wheels from the 86 and put them on the 88 and you could drive it.

Whew... 150 miles north after getting to mall of GA... Mall of GA is like 1.5 hours north of us... not sure my little indy is road worthy enough yet.  Still need to sort out the alignment...

An alignment that is on hold due to my indecision.  I know I still need to tear things apart and cut my bump stops down.  But truth be told... I want the car lower... just a half inch... so some more spring trimming is in order when the bump stops get cut and welded.  However, I have NO welder...  UGH!

Maybe next year.. :D

It's only about 50 miles from Buford to Helen.  I just gave that figure as an example of how the route wanders around, rather than being a straight drive.  I really have no idea of what path the run will take, nor how long it will be.

In the past, we've left Locust Grove and gone to Warner Robins, and I believe that one was about 150 miles.  Another was from Locust Grove to Fort Benning in Columbus and I think that was just around 100 miles.  The one pictured was from Roswell to Barnsley Gardens and I don't remeember how long it was, but again, it wasn't a direct route.  These usually take the less traveled roads at a very leisurely pace.  They're well worth the time and effort.

Also, bring your FRS radios so we can chat along the way.  Last year there were others who also used Channel 7.

OMG! If we weren't already into a party for New Years Eve I would be all over this. I've gotta get into one of these runs. I guess, once again, I will try for the next one. Looks like a Car lovers dream.
