Stranded in Concord NC
« on: January 01, 2012, 10:53:25 am »
Hi All;
Happy New Year.
We are stranded in Concord NC.  My CR-V broke down on I 85 near Concord NC last night.  I think it was the timing belt that broke. We had it towed to a MECHANIC last night that will diagnose it this morning and try to get parts and get it back together today.  Wish us luck.
If it is more serious I will have to get back to SC to get my coach to tow it back home.
What a way to start the New Year.

Linda;
Your comment is 100%.  The worst part to me is that I never let anyone work on my vehicles.  I did get a call a few minutes ago from the mechanic that he had it tore down and I was right, it was the timing belt.  I had it in my schedule to change it in the New Year, but I waited too long.  He is trying to get the belt, water pump and the drive belts now.  He won't know if there is valve damage until he gets the belt on.  I did not hear any loud noises when it broke but I was doing about 75 with the radio on loud tryiing to keep us awake so I don't know.
I will keep everyone updated.

Best of luck, Harry.

Since it happened last night, at least this was last year's bad luck. Call it a parting shot.
This year will be better.

Y'all take care.

Do you know if the vehicle has an "interference engine"? If it does, a broken timing belt guarantees valve damage. The timing belt broke on my stepson's Neon, and several valves were bent as a result.

I'm not sure if it is an interference engine or not.  I have told of it both ways.  I have not heard from the shop yet.  I called and got his answering machine but no return call yet.  I am starting to get a little worried.

I just checked on line and it is an interference engine so it most likely is severely damaged.  I still can't get an answer at the mechanics shop.

The mechanic called me back and said he had good news.  He said he put the belt and water pump on and the engine started and ran like a CLOCK so he put it all together and took it for a ride.  He said it seemed to lack power so he pulled the valve cover and everything looked good, no loose valves etc. He checked the belt again and found he had installed it one tooth off on one of the cams so he reset it and it sounds even better.  He is now going for a valve cover gasket and it SHOULD be OK and will call me when it is finished.  I hope all is well but if there are bent valves I just want it to run so I can get it home tomorrow.
Wish me luck;

If it had bent valves, you'd know it.  It wouldn't run smooth at all.  If it really is an interference engine, I don't know how you escaped without damage.  I'd have him do a compression check on it just to make sure.

If it happens that the engine is damaged, and you don't have a source for another motor (It'd probably be cheaper to replace than repair) there's a GreenLeaf Auto Recyclers down here.  Low mileage engines, and they will guarantee them.  I can transport it from here to your place if needed.  Call John Marsden at 800-942-7278, ext. 5080, 770-207-5080 or his cell at 706-247-6060.

Charlie;
It is an interference engine and I must be extremely lucky.  Thanks for the info if needed.
All;
The mechanic just called and said it is finished and everything is running as it should.  They will drop it off in the morning and I will take it for a run before I give them the check.
If it is running as good as he said, I would recommend Front End Specialties to anyone of you with engine problems while up in this neck of the woods.  He worked most of today (New Years Day) and is returning all the used parts (Without me asking) and only charged me $496.

We made it home yesterday afternoon.  The car is running great.  I got real lucky.  It collapsed a couple of lifters but when he started it, they pumped up and all is well.  I would guess the lifters collapsing saved the valves and pistons.
I would advise anyone that has trouble while in the Concord area call Carters Towing at 704 436 6111 and Shawn at Front End Specialists for service at 704 436 2100.  They are both honest and trustworthy.  We had the car loaded to the gills with baggage, christmas presents and groceries from Sam's.
We ended the Old Year with bad luck but started the New Year with good luck.
Happy New Year All;
